How to do a name change with immigration

Changing your name with immigration is similar to changing your name with the social security administration. With immigration you will need to submit the appropriate form depending on your status.

If you currently only have an employment authorization document (also known as a work permit) and it is close to expiring, you would be able to use this renewal opportunity to make a change to your name as well. To do this you must show proof of your name change on your social security card. This proof must be submitted along with your employment authorization document renewal application with USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services).

In the case that you are a legal permanent resident, the same applies, only that for this the renewal process is different.  You would need to fill out and submit the application to replace a permanent resident card along with proof of your legal name.

It is advisable to always seek legal assistance to submit any kind of form with immigration. If you are needing to change your name with immigration, please give us a call. We are happy to assist you.
